[MasaMania writes (with tons of photos) about street racing|http://masamania.com/archives/2005/07/street_car_raci.html] in Tokyo. Hashiriya is the name of the races. Seeing the photos I never could have imagined that there could be so much powerful cars in just one place.

Alaa reports that armed state security forces detained the Egyptian journalist Ahmad Abdollah "Abo Islam". They broke in to his house on Monday. Five bloggers visited him and knew from his son that state security forces threatened his family at gun point and confiscated computer hard drives, CDs and books. He was a member of the Labour "El A'aml" party, former editor in ASha'ab newspaper and published two other newspapers. Currently he writes on a website called Balady Net. Abo Islam runs the Center for Islamic Enlightenment, which aims at bringing different religions closer together.

The Egyptian version of the [Zastava 128 GLS|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiat_128] is back and [available for sale|http://yugomisr.com/]. The [Car of the year|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_of_the_Year] 1969 is back in production in 2005. Well, actually it is almost 2006 by now.

Speaking of 2006 and the 21st century and so on. [Read about hybrid vehicles|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid_vehicles].

But you know, the 128 deserves our respect. She was so useful to so many people. And probably still useful to many today. For almost 30 years (or more?), this car was the hallmark of the Egyptian streets.

I once saw a 128 in the Netherlands while I was in transit going back home from Canada. I was 16 years old at the time and I was home sick after 40 days in North America. But seeing the 128 suddenly made me feel closer to home.
