ISPs block 3 websites

[JC says that |http://jimmys-corner.blogspot.com/2006/03/step-on-way-to-democracy-update.html] that he received two emails informing him that three main opposition websites are now blocked by the government. Users of the main ISPs (Linkdotnet, Tedata and Raya) in Egypt cannot have any access to these sites anymore.

These websites are:
*[Save Egypt Front|http://www.saveegyptfront.org/]
*[Masreyat|http://www.masreyat.org/]
*[Egyptian Talks|http://www.egyptiantalks.org/]

The [Ikhwan website is still accessible|http://www.ikhwanonline.com], which was [blocked in 2005|http://www.manalaa.net/ikhwan_online_blocked]. I think blocking an Ikhwan site now is harder than it used to be. The 87 Ikhwan MPs will bother the government about their own sites only.

Egyptian Talks is a respectable forum with long history of discussing many political issues in Egypt openely and in reasonable and moderate tone. Although I remember once they had to shut one of their forums that discussed an issue related to Mubarak.

10 random links

Interesting links I found by chance, that are not widely known. They are all tagged `[egypt|http://del.icio.us/whirlpool/egypt]' in my [bookmarks|http://del.icio.us/whirlpool/]:

This is a coca cola PR film made in the late 40s or early 50s in Egypt ... super cool and very funny. Worth the download.

Finally a live webcam in Egypt. I love webcams. Now this website allows you to take a look at the pyramids every now and then from anywhere. They have a few time-lapse videos too.

Al-Salam Boccaccio 98

[More than one thousand families have lost a loved one.|http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060204/ap_on_re_mi_ea/egypt_ship_sinks;_ylt=AsL1FvHqffzVxhsRnV.Cvdas0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTA2Z2szazkxBHNlYwN0bQ--] They have lost a member of the family that already had it the hard way; a manual labourer in the Gulf. Most of them trying to collect as much few money as they could, so they can help their own family survive.

In other words, a tragic crisis.

Do you think anyone cares ? Non at all.

For the government. It is acceptable to do a careless job in anything. And in this tragedy it will be so. From the preventive measures, the rescue and up to the investigation. For the government those lives are of no value whatsoever. We have been conditioned to this. We find it normal and acceptable for the government to do a lousy job in anything. But it is not mutual. The government is never held accountable.

Egyptian journalist detained

Alaa reports that armed state security forces detained the Egyptian journalist Ahmad Abdollah "Abo Islam". They broke in to his house on Monday. Five bloggers visited him and knew from his son that state security forces threatened his family at gun point and confiscated computer hard drives, CDs and books. He was a member of the Labour "El A'aml" party, former editor in ASha'ab newspaper and published two other newspapers. Currently he writes on a website called Balady Net. Abo Islam runs the Center for Islamic Enlightenment, which aims at bringing different religions closer together.

The Fiat 128 is back

The Egyptian version of the [Zastava 128 GLS|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiat_128] is back and [available for sale|http://yugomisr.com/]. The [Car of the year|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_of_the_Year] 1969 is back in production in 2005. Well, actually it is almost 2006 by now.

Speaking of 2006 and the 21st century and so on. [Read about hybrid vehicles|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid_vehicles].

But you know, the 128 deserves our respect. She was so useful to so many people. And probably still useful to many today. For almost 30 years (or more?), this car was the hallmark of the Egyptian streets.

I once saw a 128 in the Netherlands while I was in transit going back home from Canada. I was 16 years old at the time and I was home sick after 40 days in North America. But seeing the 128 suddenly made me feel closer to home.

Recycle your phone battery

[Mobinil|http://www.mobinil.com/] is encouraging mobile phone users to recycle their old batteries. The company will give a 5 EGP Alo prepaid card or a gift in exchange for your old mobile battery.

From a [press release|http://www.mobinil.com/media_relations/Press_Releases/SinglePressRelease.aspx?PressID=203]:
;:MobiNil has committed itself to creating a collection system for used batteries, which are then shipped to specialized plants in the UK and Europe for safe recycling.

Egypt: HIV+

I have nothing new to say. Probably people reading this already know that the moral stigma of HIV is getting more people infected. The ignoramuses fearing that people would be promiscuous because of sex ed, are helping no one. Arguments against teaching teenagers about sex, drugs and condoms are no longer justified. I think more delays in introducing such classes will be a landmark failure in proper reasoning by the Egyptian society.

From the [latest UNAIDS|http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4457208.stm] report ([full text|http://www.unaids.org/epi2005/doc/EPIupdate2005_html_en/epi05_11_en.htm]):
;:Official data from Egypt indicate an epidemic that is driven mainly by unprotected sex—with heterosexual intercourse accounting for about one half of HIV cases where the mode of transmission was noted, and sex between men for a further one fifth. Injecting drug use was the mode of transmission in just 2% of HIV cases. Yet, researchers have encountered high levels of risky behaviour among injecting drug users in Cairo, for instance, with more than half the surveyed injectors saying they used non-sterile injecting equipment in the previous month (Elshimi, Warner-Smith and Aon, 2004).
