8 hours

Today was my second day in a year long internship (a.k.a Emtiaz). I had an 8 hour long shift from 08:00 till 20:00. Learned lots of things, but it is very tiring. I feel like a zombie writing this.

Currently, I am in the pediatrics hospital. Some kids are just wonderful, others are annoying and lots of the kids break your heart from the painful cries or the grave illnesses. Lots of work in this hospital. And everyone is doing their best, as far as I can see.

Free Mojtaba and Arash Day

Iranian bloggers are awesome. There are almost 65,000 ''active'' blogs from an estimated 200,000. At such number any oppressive regime must be in terror, if it fears freedom of expression.

Anyhow, I hope non of the handful Egyptian bloggers will end up like Mojtaba, Arash or any of the prosecuted bloggers in Iran. Well, lets just hope that more Egyptian bloggers would start to exist and start poking the limits of freedom in the press and other controlled media.

Google before anything

I have been receiving large number of sms.ac invitations in the past months. I have never responded to those invitations, but they are very annoying and it seems like my friends are spamming me with those invitations.

Yesterday, it drove me nuts. The invitations are repeating every few days, warning me that I am not responding to requests and sms.ac keeps on resending the requests!

Anyways, a simple google search shows that sms.ac does both; scam and spam.

Now, to google before every web service they join is too much trouble for my ''Fwd:Fwd:friends''.

How can I tell them to be a little bit more cautious?

UPDATE: Ok, solution is very simple. Create a filter rule in your mail application to move any mail that matches invitiation.sms.ac (in the from: field) to Trash. This will not solve the spam, but at least will end the crazy requests.

ROCing the boat

Last year I attended the first phase of an intensive training course called Research Orientation Course (ROC). It provides training for medical students on scientific methods and research.

I learned a lot from this course.

I think we, medical students, are being taught in a negative way which is based on rote learning only. This results in conformist physicians who lack any understanding of the history and philosophy of medical science. And know nothing about why and how science works. Students are oblivious to the fact that what they have learned is not dogma, and medical sciences will be updated, changed and revised in the future, infinite number of times.

All of this results in graduates who will have to overcome lots of hard coded mental sets to be able to upgrade their knowledge and skills. ROC emphasizes on the importance of logic, inquiry, rationality, reasoning and scientific methods in our field.

A Feast of Ebooks

Alaa mentions on his blog our purchase of a CD filled with 267 ebooks from a series published by the Kuwait National Culture and Art Council. The series contain several books in many fields, many of them are translated from popular books. Here is a list of the translated books. They are all in Arabic.

I am going to Dahab for five days.
