Advice for Registrars (Part 3)
This is part 3 of a post with some basic advice for psychiatry registrars that I send out every year. Read the first part and second part.
Reflective Practice (RP) 🪞
We have been running monthly RP groups at our hospital and it has been very popular. I learned about it from an RCPsych newletter and thought that this was a good idea to get trainees to share, reflect and learn from their encounters.
The value of RP is that it lets you stop and think about what you are doing, this helps your learning. Since this is only a quick post on the topic, I would like to highlight the following points:
- RP can be done individually on your own or in group.
- Write things down, this will make it a much more valuable exercise.
- This is a simplified form that you can print and use in groups or individually.
- RP isn't only for negative or difficult clinical encounters.
- Revisiting your notes is a great way to evaluate your growth.
- RP isn't exclusive to psychiatry.
